Gluten free picnic ideas with Australian Macadamias

How to pack a gluten free picnic hamper that is delicious for everyone!

Picnics are a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather. It can be fun to design portable treats or find recipes that will still work when you don’t have access to the kitchen.

But what should you do if you are catering for a gluten free friend? We have compiled the best gluten free picnic ideas (full of tasty macadamias, of course!) for just that occasion.

1 – Raw and roasted macadamias

Macadamias themselves are naturally gluten free. So a container of plain, roasted nuts is a moreish addition to your picnic basket. You also can add some dried fruit and coconut to the nuts to create a delicious macadamia trail mixSpicing and smoking or adding tamari to the nuts is also an impressive way to enhance their flavour (just make sure the ingredients you add are labelled as gluten free).

2 – Macadamia hummus

A selection of gluten-free dips is the perfect picnic fare. Macadamia hummus is always a crowd pleaser. This brightly-coloured roast beetroot, onion and macadamia dip brightens up the plate. Remember to provide gluten free crackers for your guests to scoop the dip up with.

3 – Quick macadamia biscuits

Biscuits, cookies and slices make elegant picnic options. They are usually easy to transport in a container and are a good finger food option. These quick mix macadamia cookies are perfect if you are in a rush to get out the door.

4 – Banana and macadamia bread

This gluten-free banana and macadamia bread is a delicious portable treat. For a creamy topping, slather the slices with macadamia butter either before you go or when you are out and about. Alternatively, for those with extra dietary requirements, these plant-based scones are gluten free, grain free, dairy free, refined sugar free and egg free, yet still delicious!

5 – Macadamia smoked salmon canapes

Easy to assemble canapes make good gluten free picnic additions because they are an individually portioned finger food. Combining macadamia cream cheese and smoked salmon on top of a cucumber round instead of a cracker is a great gluten free trick. Alternatively, these dairy free macadamia cheese canapes are fantastic for outdoor eating – just make sure you substitute in a gluten free cracker to use as a base.
